Great outdoors

The glacier-dug lake is 75 ft deep in places, and spring-fed with cool, clean water. Two miles in circumference, the lake is just big enough without being noisy or overcrowded.

Build a fire in the fire pit, or with a variety of nearby trails you may want to bring your fat-tire bikes, ATVs, snowmobiles, cross-country skis or snowshoes. Christie Mountain is a nearby ski/tubing recreation center, about a 20 minute drive away.

Relax on the dock and watch the lake traffic: loons, eagles, turtles and sometimes even an otter or fox may pay you a visit. Use our canoe, row boat, or paddle board to explore the lake. Paddles and life vests are available for your use.

There are no gas motors allowed on our pristine lake, but there is a public boat landing in Birchwood to access both Birch Lake and Lake Chetac. Lake Chetac is great for recreational boats, fishing & water sports. Pontoons can be rented at a number of resorts along Hwy F, we recommend The Fred Thomas. The closest beach in Birchwood and has a small playground.

Around Town

Birchwood | A quick drive down F, Birchwood has a grocery store, breakfast cafe, very well stocked gas stations with all the essentials. Our favorite stops are Paul’s Pizza Den, Mary’s Bluegill Bar and Bear Tracks Bar & Grill. The Ice Age Tuscobia Trailhead is located in town. Bringing a boat? There is a public boat landing for Birch Lake with access to Lake Chetac. Birch Lake has a small beach and playground for the kiddos.

Stone Lake | Located twenty minutes from the cabin and on the way to Hayward. This charming town has a fun coffee shop called the Whistle Punk, Red Schoolhouse Wines and a General Mercantile. It also has a greenhouse, skatepark, trail, softball field and hosts the annual Cranberry Fest in the fall.

Spooner | A quick 30 minute drive will bring you to the thriving downtown in Spooner. Stuffed with cute boutiques, coffee shops, a brewery, bookstores, large grocery store, yoga studios and dive bars. The handcrafted candles & chocolates are worth the drive alone. The friendly people will keep you going back. Insider Tip: Plan a stop at Perlick Distillery and give their handcrafted vodka a try!

Hayward | About 40 minutes away, Hayward has an adorable Main Street, Marketplace Grocery Store, candy stores, clothing boutqi=ues shops, great bars and restaurants. We love Angry Minnow Brewery for tasty treats and brews. Norske Nook is a must if you are pie-fanatic. Hayward also boasts the annual World Lumberjack Competition and American Birkebeiner. Both events draw crowds from all over the world to partake in the time honored traditions of the north woods. There is a gem used-book store, called a Hole-In-The-Wall Books.

Rice Lake | Also about a 40 minute drive, Rice Lake has many chain stores & big retailers for all your needs. Sorry Minnesota friends, there’s no Target, but there is Walmart, Menard’s and Fleet Farm.
